Hey fellow Lemmy Users!

As far as i can tell, instance blocking is good for not destroying the All feed but what bugs me is that it seems like i am not able to subscribe to communities of blocked instances. I know that the big instances will try not to “abuse” this “power” for censoring the endusers choice but i think having this option is not good. I dont know if its possible with ActivityPub to limit connections between instances or if it always needs to be a true/false thing.

There could be different stages of blocking:

  • Users from instance x are blocked on our instance / our Users are not affected if they want to interact with instance x

  • Post from instance x are blocked in our All feed but our users can still access the instance

  • Full block, just like it is now

If i’m completely wrong about blocking, sorry for wasting your time. Tell me what you think about this!

As an instance admin, the instances that I block are explicitly ones that I don’t want my users to be able to subscribe to for any reason because they are full of bigotry and hate.

If I have a user that really wants to subscribe to a blocked instance, then chances are my instance is the wrong one for them.

@Sewot I don’t know anything about Lemmy moderation but with Mastodon if an admin wants to moderate a remote instance there are is a Suspend option and a Limit option.
    - Suspend is a hard block. Content and requests from the remote instance will not be accepted at all.
    - Limit prohibits content from the remote instance from appearing in public feeds or to users that aren’t actively subscribed to that content.

I do not know if Lemmy has an equivalent, but it seems feasible.
