Removed Comment > Anecdote: I’ve been vegan for over 20 That isn't the norm though. Over 80% of vegans will eat meat again. Some people can handle that diet better than others. Some people will have medical problems pretty quick. For me I ended up with gum disease. It turns out the vitamins in fat help keep the gum lining healthy. A couple years on keto and that went away. > As for water usage, we are talking about the total water cost to bring meat to the shelf. This includes the feed crops that wouldn’t otherwise be grown. The thing about cows, they eat grass. Grass that grows anyways. If you buy from the farm basically no extra water is used. Eating mono crops on the other hand uses lots of water and kills thousands of rodents. Plus cows make the ground more fertile. There isn't a valid argument to reduce cows if you want to save the environment. Only people. If you do a complete analysis on all greenhouse gasses , water usage, power, ect removing cows will do more harm than good. We dont have technology that can recycle nutrients as good as a ruminant. And you'll just make people who need that nutrition less healthy. BTW, babies who eat meat as a first food tend to have larger brains and heads. If you had really good nutrition as a child the body can go a long time without it as an adult. by @linuxtube@lemmy.ml reason: Failed to sustantiate claims after request for reputable sources.

They mailed out questions in the hopes that people remembered what they ate. There has not been a single study in the history of the world that fed one group red meat and another group another food and found that the red meat causes cancer and diabetes. They always rely on unreliable meta analysis and questionnaires that can't be verified. Its bad science. > Honestly, meat barely has any health benefits that plants can’t provide, aside from vitamine B12 There are dozens of nutrients only found in animal foods. Including full form vitamin D, full form vitamin A, full form iron. The plant form of these vitamins is not complete and some people can't even convert the base forms and must consume the animal forms. Look at the nutritional value of liver. Not a single plant comes anywhere close. ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/5402d54b-abc0-4948-8373-5dca59db4bab.jpeg) Also, the water used on animals is quickly returned to the environment. Their stomachs are able to digest cellulose while we need starch as we lack the ability to deprotonate cellulose thus can’t utilize its potential chemical energy. You keep saying " Science " and then prove you have no understanding of the "science" in question. The cows are not getting the nutrients from the plants. They are getting the nutrients from the byproduct of bacteria fermenting the grasses in their stomach. Its actually unhealthy for them to eat grains and its only to fatten them up at the end if their life. > Are you seriously saying the list of reports identifying factory farms as the perfect breeding ground for zoonotic viruses and massive air and water pollution shouldn’t be considered? I'm saying they should be considered with a grain of salt like all other reports with a conflict of interest . > 99% of All Animal Products in the U.S. Come From Factory Farms: https://www.livekindly.com/99-animal-products-factory-farms/ You've linked a extremely bias source and we've already established that the figure of 70% of cows coming from factory farms is incorrect and misleading. The vast majority of cows spend most their life in the sun and grass and only go to the factory for harvest. That is where they get the 70% figure for cows. 30% never see a factory farm. The other 70% spend most their life in the sun and grass and are then sold for harvest to the factory farm where they are fed grains until slaughter. If you want to put a stop to factory farming eat grass fed grass finished beef. And you've done your part. > Even more so, back in the early 2000’s a book called The China Study That thing has been debunked so many times. Chinese people love eating meat. Organs, meat, brains. Hong Kong has the most meat consumption per person in the world and one of the highest life expectancies. That single fact proves every study about meat shortening life wrong. India has some of the lowest meat consumption and a terribly short life expectancy. But keep eating processed fake meats made with seed oils that that cause strokes I guess. Removed Comment > Makes sense, except for the fact on a cellular level the stocks will predominantly contain just cellulose which is a variation of startch. So that handleds carbs yet there are many other needs from a dietary standpoint to raise a cow. What are you talking about? Cows only need grass, water and sun. Its not edible starch. Its trash we cant eat. > Plenty of data demonstrating its harmful effects on the planet at the current scale. I dont think so. You might find a biased study here and there but mono crops are much worse than cows eating grass. Every steak you replace with soy and wheat destroyed the soil. > 99% of meat is from factory farms Citation needed. Most cows live happy lives in the grass and sun. Chickens maybe. I like beef more than chicken anyway. I eat beef everyday because I care about the environment and animals. To harvest mono crops you destroy the soil and kill millions of rodents. I eat about one cow a year . That cow ate grass its whole life happy in the sun and left the world greener and the soil more fertile than it was before that cow was there. Again beef is extremely nutritious, is mostly family farmed and makes the soil more fertile. In my opinion If you care about your health, the environment, and animal suffering you will eat as much beef as you can and as little soy, wheat, and factory farmed chickens as possible. I'm dead serious. Eat cows to save the planet. by @linuxtube@lemmy.ml reason: Failed to sustantiate claims after request for reputable sources.

Removed Comment > There’s no protein or fat in stocks too?', so the feed has to be comprised of many other crops as well. No. They dont need protein rich seeds. Cows have four stomachs and can digest grass. We can't. The corn plant is a type of grass. ( One that has been breed to be large with a big juicy seed clump. ) that is what is so amazing about cows. They turn stuff we can't eat into vitamin rich meat, fat and milk. Cows are often fed grains at the end of their life to fatten them up. You can buy grass fed, grass finished cows BTW. They are never fed food humans can eat. > As far as the land goes, Cattle aren’t native in the States at least so not too sure why the land would suffer without them in these parts. Buffalo are native to the states. ( they are a type of cow, they can even breed with cows). As are many other grass eaters that have been mostly hunted off or pushed away to national parks. Grass actually needs grass eaters to survive. They are symbiotic. The cows create nutrients for the soil too. We need more not less. Reduce the usage of chemical fertilizers and use more cow manure. Cows can turn soil that has been depleted of nutrients from mono crops back into fertile soil. If you ended beef production we would all starve to death. Not overnight, but without ruminants our soil would not be able to grow grains. by @linuxtube@lemmy.ml reason: Failed to sustantiate claims after request for reputable sources.
