Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, dozens of well-known football clubs, including Real Sociedad, Olympique Lyon, and PSV Eindhoven, have concluded transfer deals with Russian clubs worth millions of euros. In doing so, they risked violating sanctions imposed on Russia, an international investigation led by Follow the Money shows. National football associations may also be in trouble. Many clubs claim that FIFA greenlit the transfers, while the latter points its fingers at the clubs, arguing that they bear the responsibility for complying with sanctions.
