Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) also revealed that a further 40 countries generate at least 50% of their electricity from renewable energy technologies like wind, water, or solar.
The data, which refer to the years 2021 and 2022, have been compiled by Professor Mark Z. Jacobson from Stanford University in the U.S.
The top ten countries are:
- Albania
- Buthan
- Nepal
- Paraguay
- Ethiopia
- Iceland
- Congo
- Costa Rica
- Norway
- Namibia
I’m a little confused by the data. In one place it talks about generation and another it talks about consumption. It does not sounds like those countries are consuming that much in renewables. If I have one solar panel in my country, but the neighboring country generates 99.9% of the energy my country consumes and they use coal, I would still qualify as 100% renewable on this list.

I am sorry but the data on top of the list is bad statistics, there are definitely more generation on these nations with raw diesel, light and heavy fuel oil. Those plants might not be directly connected to the electricity grid, but used locally.
