Just saw this post on reddit. The consensus on the comments is that it’s completely the bikers fault and he should have waited.

I see it completely different. When he was at the intersection the street is clear and there are even people still crossing the lane on the other side of the road. (see picture)

The transporter is speeding at such an elevated speed that it was not possible to judge this.

What do you think?

  • 100% the fault of the van. Like you said, if I were the biker, I would have looked left and saw that everyone was at a reasonable distance and would also judge that it’s safe to go, especially since he had some speed.

And the van goes at a very high speed, which should make them extra wary of people coming on the crosswalk. I mean, they shouldn’t have had that speed in that area in the first place. They should be at fault just for the speeding.

As some people on Reddit pointed out, this intersection is confusing in its design, as there aren’t any traffic lights visible. Just a giant crosswalk, which makes it seem pedestrians and bikers can cross at their leisure. This would seem to indicate a slow zone for cars.

In any case, even as an ambulance with sirens blaring, it’s inadvisable to go as fast as possible where there are pedestrian crossings. It is sometimes difficult to figure out where the ambulance is when one cannot yet see it. If there were anyone on foot in a similar place as this poor biker, the ambulance would have hit them as well.

There are a lot of anti-cyclist comments though, which makes me glad drivers in Germany actually know how to pay attention to pedestrians and cyclists.
