Is Seafile any good? It’s similar to nextcloud, but apparently faster etc.

Mobile apps both have pretty bad ratings on the app stores.

What would you host for yourself, friends and family, basic dropbox functionality is all I need.

I have hosted Nextcloud in the past but it’s a huge program with way too many tools, apps and a complicated way to update, the end result is often a slow and not very comfortable way to use the aforementioned basic dropbox functionality.

I am a bit skeptical about Seafile, as there have been various companies involved in it including some major legal dispute between a (I think) German and a Chinese company.

Also in Nextcloud the files are still accessible in clear on the server (unless you use the build-in server side encryption, which I can’t recommend), which is not the case for Seafile as it uses some sort of custom object storage thing internally. I rather manage disk-encryption and object storage separately and have the files available in clear when something bad happens during an update or so.

Good points. I am trying to move away from nextcloud though.

Why? Tired of small bugs here and there?

Yes that and what feels like bloat. I don’t need 100s of apps and collaboration features, I want reliable, stable and lightweight syncing from mobile, web and desktop client to the server at home. Updating it is a pain, stuff like that.

After thinking about it, if not nextcloud i would try the cryptpad suite (cryptdrive cryptoffice etc)
