a more formal beehaw introduction thread
pin
the big stickied thread is getting cluttered with lots of new people and the "how was your week" thread isn't a *great* fit for introductions, so it seems about time to make this a dedicated thread of its own so peoples' posts aren't getting lost. tell us a little bit about yourself, folks. don't gotta be too specific or revealing, just whatever you want to put out there. this'll be a good way of getting to know all the people you're now on here with

how’s your week going, Beehaw
pin
so far the weekend has been pretty good. currently: writing about labor stuff, also reading [this book](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35711882-america-city). it has been a pretty mild and wet spring so far which is rare for here, and i'm enjoying that while it lasts

Do you work from home? How are you finding it?
I've worked from home a few years now, and whilst the upsides are well known I've personally found some challenges there too. Have you experienced anything similar? How did you deal with it? _____ My tale: When the UK went into lockdown (along with everyone else) in early 2020 I started working from home full-time. For the first year I was with the same team I'd worked with for years whilst in the office, so nothing really changed except my location. I switched jobs mid-2021 and the new team was much smaller. I work as a software developer, and this team was a grand total of three people including myself. We didn't have many meetings, only one a week, and except for being assigned new work I never interacted with anyone. It took a big toll on my mental health and I quit after three months. I took an extended break from software development and started working on a plant nursery, driving tractors and tending plants - it was so much fun, but paid very little and ate into my savings a lot. Went back to software development last year and thankfully manage things much better. I'm not a very social person, so it was surprising how important socialisation was to my mental wellbeing. I'm now part of quite a large team that speaks regularly, and when I next change jobs I know that this is something I need to look for. I also have a garden now, so when the call of the wild hits me I go outside and sniff my tomato plants. I do miss driving tractors though.

Suggest me…anything?
It's the weekend for me, and I'd just love some suggestions. Movies? TV shows? Coffee? Holiday destinations? Software? Apps? Books? Something new to make for dinner? Websites? It's up to you, but I'd love some (hopefully) random suggestions from all of you to look into something new!

I can fucking relax a little bit
Over the past 48 hours I have been glued to my screen trying to figure out how to make Beehaw more robust during this Reddit exodus. My eyes are burning but I am thankful for so much financial support as well as the work of two sysadmins that have given us all a breath of fresh air. One of the sysadmins was up until 2:30 am helping us out as a volunteer. I am so very grateful for persons such as this. Thank you all for your continued support and patience.

how would you describe yourself politically, Beehaw, and why?
we previously had this thread but it was lost in a sitewide crash. kind of fortuitous, given all the new people! anyways, i'm interested in how you describe yourself politically but also *why* you do so, and/or how you came to the beliefs that you did. be as brief or lengthy as you want in answering that. additionally, as a preface: i would like this to be a generally non-judgemental thread and i think this community is more than capable of that, so please respect that idea.[^1] in general, you are not obliged to *justify* to myself or anyone else why you believe what you do. [^1]: exceptions, obviously, go for bigotry or intolerant beliefs that would be otherwise incompatible with the community's ethos. bluntly if you're a transphobe or something like that *this is not the community for you*.

Beehaw’s user count tripled this week
The [overall Lemmy stats](https://the-federation.info/platform/73) haven't changed as dramatically, but there has been an uptick in active users.

I know its mascot is a bee but I can't help imagining a donkey given how it's pronounced...

Can anyone tell me what song my kids are singing?
My kids keep singing a song. I've googled what they are saying but it doesn't come up with anything. They are singing "enchilada, enchilada, making toys" Sort of like *enchilada, enchilada*, may-king-toys Any ideas? Edit: The oldest is 6 if that helps narrow down the options

what’s your best internet community related memory, Beehaw?
many people who have joined have related their extended stints on communities Reddit, Dig, Slashdot, or even older places like Usenet, and i'm super interested in what your best memories and favorite experiences on places like that have been in your time using them

What is your preferred method of sorting posts?
Hi all. New user as of yesterday (reddit refugee). Am playing around between the lemmy.one site and the Jerboa app. I have subscribed to a bunch of communities to get a feel for what is available through Lemmy. How do you prefer to sort posts? All, subbed, local? Newest, active, new comments, etc.? I am trying to find a more efficient way of viewing posts I am more likely to have interest in and/or communities in which to participate. Just looking for ideas from others in how they best utilize this platform. Thanks

People posting to nature and gardening community makes me so happy
even though I have nothing to contribute

A worry/wish with lemmy.
I've been using lemmy for a little while now. I feel like one of the strongest attractions I still have to reddit is the ability to find posts via a search engine. Typically I can type in whatever question I have and add "reddit" and get a far better answer than whatever google will give. I understand that lemmy doesn't have this feature due to it being written in rust but I hope that sometime in the future we can find our way around this.

what do you do in your free time to wind down?
We all have those moments when we get home after working or doing something labor intensive and just want to relax, what do you do to wind down after a long day?

Who can tell me how federation works between peertube servers?
cross-posted from: https://feddit.de/post/714603 > Because it doesn't seem to work as I expected. > > I thought if a peertube server follows another peertube server that all the videos that the second server uploads to any channel are automatically pushed into the timeline of the first server. That doesn't seem to be the case though, I have seen multiple servers that follow each other but the videos posted on one are nowhere to be found on the other. > > Why have this servers following servers thing then? Is it just a whitelist? But if it was a whitelist I shouldn't be able to follow any accounts on other servers from an obscure pt account, which doesn't seem to be the case also. > > Soooooo, any ideas? Just bugs?

Apparently some popular vendors and brands are selling a mulch that is highly toxic to both cats and dogs. Marketed as a way to keep cats from digging up your garden, no reference is made at all to the dangers it poses to your own dogs.

Should Beehaw have a “Work” or “Antiwork” subhaw?
I've had a couple of posts that didn't really fit neatly into existing subhaws, that might be better suited to something like this, but what do people think? Lemmy.ml has Antiwork, I think, but I sometimes get a little nervous about posting things there.

Do you workout? If so, what’s your routine?
I go to the gym a few days a week and run a couple miles on some others.

What do you all think about cosplaying?
As an amateur cosplayer, I think that cosplaying is cool and fun.

Where should I post videos?
I'm on YouTube a lot. I find a cool video but it doesn't neatly fit into the current set of Beehaw communities. Where should I share it?

how’s your week going, Beehaw
currently working through [Under the Banner of Heaven](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10847.Under_the_Banner_of_Heaven) which would be book #16 for the year; this week is likely to be a pretty quiet one for me and there's not much to immediately report

What the fuck was CNN thinking giving Mango Mussolini a stage?
So far, he's laughed and joked about a woman's right to an abortion and called a black police officer a thug. Trump is fucking insane and a worthless piece of flesh.

A couple of months ago there where 30+ likes on meme posts etc. Nowadays it seems like posts on beehaw.org are upvoted more than lemmy.ml. Did this change come with the latest lemmy update that gave everyone those language errors?

how’s your week going, Beehaw
for the most part, my sinus infection is over--still dealing with residual stuffiness and congestion, but it feels like allergies now which i can handle. currently reading [Extreme Cities](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28952797-extreme-cities) by Ashley Dawson.

How does human (labour) trafficking differ than regular old migrant labor?
Best I can come up with is that if the conditions are too bad then it's human trafficking. In both case they "consent" to do labor, however human traffickees are often tricked into a more casino-like raw deal. In both cases, it's not uncommon to not be unable to quit the job. Source: I know a lot of migrant labourers

We’re a collective of individuals upset with the way social media has been traditionally governed. A severe lack of moderation has led to major platforms like Facebook to turn into political machinery focused on disinformation campaigns as a way to make profit off of users. Websites with ineffective moderation allow hate speech to proliferate and contribute to the erosion of minority rights and safe spaces. Our goal with Beehaw is to demonstrate and promote a healthier environment.

    Some thoughts on our philosophy:

Operating our server costs money. If you donate, you should know that 100% of the costs will go towards server time, licensing costs, and artwork. In the future if we need to hire developers or other labor, it would be sourced through the Open Collective Foundation, and it would be transparent to the community before any changes were made.

As a news aggregator and a social media outlet, with a focus on being a safe and accepting space, we strive to create a positive social impact. We will, also, help to connect underprivileged and minority individuals with education and civic participation by promoting a healthier online experience.
